Baby is Listening Babies have been listening to the rhythm and melody of their mother’s voice since the fourth month after conception. Although the language of the mother is not yet understood, her voice penetrates the baby’s nervous system with the “music of language,” the precursor of spoken language. Newborns recognize and are comforted by the sound of mother’s voice. Music connects the familiar wounds of mother’s voice before birth with life outside the womb.
